As we move through winter, the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley is buzzing with energy—and nowhere is that more visible than in our Souhegan Valley Basketball Program. What began as a way to offer kids a place to play has grown into one of our most impactful youth development programs, supporting young people both on and off the court. This winter, the Club is fielding a record seven travel teams with more than 80 youth in grades 3–8 competing in the Manchester Suburban Basketball League. Our program emphasizes development, positivity, sportsmanship, and fun—creating an environment where youth can challenge themselves, build skills, and feel supported no matter their experience level. None of this would be possible without the incredible dedication of our volunteer coaches and leaders. Led by Bonnie Sinclair, a longtime basketball coach and BGCSV Board Member, more than ten volunteer parents, staff members, and community members step up to guide our teams each season. Their commitment goes far beyond wins and losses. Coaches focus on helping kids develop confidence, work ethic, discipline, and respect—while always remembering why we gather in the gym in the first place: to enjoy the game and grow together. The relationships built through basketball extend well beyond the court. Club staff and volunteers connect with youth in new ways through practices and games, strengthening trust and creating shared moments of joy, growth, and resilience. Sports offer a powerful mirror for life—full of challenges, victories, setbacks, and teamwork—and our program helps youth navigate those moments with support and encouragement. Our basketball programming continues to grow to meet youth interest. In addition to winter travel basketball, the Club offers a wide range of opportunities for all genders and age groups, including fall and spring AAU, summer leagues, intramural programs, skills clinics (now serving Kindergarten and 1st grade), and open gym opportunities for high school youth. As interest grows, we grow with it—working to ensure that every young person who wants to play has a place on the court. This work reflects the Boys & Girls Club mission: to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Through basketball, youth learn perseverance, teamwork, and how to navigate both the highs and lows that come with trying something challenging. Every practice, every game, and every moment of encouragement helps shape young people who believe in themselves and their ability to grow. We are deeply grateful to the volunteers who make this program possible, especially Bonnie Sinclair for her leadership and dedication, Logan Woods for helping expand athletics at the Club, and all of the volunteer coaches and officials who give their time to support our kids. Your generosity of time and heart creates opportunities that change lives—one game at a time.
