At the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley, social recreation between our kids and staff is a cornerstone of the community we strive to build. Through both friendly competition and shared experiences, kids learn to win humbly, lose gracefully, and—most importantly—build trust, friendships, and lasting connections. While these values are essential, this space is also where the fun truly begins.

Through table games such as pool, ping pong, and air hockey, we give kids the opportunity to challenge themselves and each other. Whether competing against peers or even staff, they are encouraged to grow their skills while enjoying the moment. We incorporate both individual and group-based challenges, often with small prizes to keep engagement high. While we reinforce that it’s “just a game,” the excitement of competition helps build communication, teamwork, and confidence—all while allowing kids to simply be kids.
Since my arrival in the Social Recreation Department, we have expanded our structured group programming to give kids consistent opportunities to grow together. Activities such as Chess Club, Four Square Friday, and our online Pokémon League—featuring 16 participants over eight to ten weeks—create an environment where kids support one another, learn from mistakes, and celebrate each other’s successes.
One example that stands out is a second grader, "M," who is a regular in the games room. She approaches every activity with enthusiasm and a constant smile, eager to try anything we offer. What stands out most, however, is the support she receives from her peers. Whether they are older or younger, her friends consistently encourage her, showing the kind of inclusive environment we aim to foster every day.

This is especially evident during our most popular program, Four Square Friday. The game is competitive, fast-paced, and full of energy—but it also brings out meaningful moments of empathy and support. At one point, M struggled to keep up, feeling discouraged by older and more experienced players. Without hesitation, other kids stepped in—offering her extra chances, encouragement, and patience. Over time, through persistence and the support of her peers, M pushed through those challenges and ultimately earned the title of Four Square Friday Super Champion.
This recognition, awarded every ten weeks, celebrates not just performance, but effort, sportsmanship, and the ability to uplift others. M’s journey is just one example of what happens when kids are given the space to grow together. It reflects the greater mission of our Boys & Girls Club: to help youth reach their full potential and shape a generation defined not only by merely their skill, but by their kindness, resilience, and the community they wish to build.
