STEAM in Action: How Advanced Art Club & Critters & Conservation Are Inspiring Creativity and Curiosity at the Club

At the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley, our STEAM programming is designed to meet kids where they are—nurturing curiosity, creativity, and confidence through hands-on, play-based learning. Two of our newest clubs, Advanced Art Club and Critters & Conservation Club, were created after listening to what our youth were asking for and noticing where deeper opportunities could make a meaningful difference. Advanced Art Club Advanced Art Club was created to meet a specific need among youth who were ready to go beyond traditional crafts and explore art in a deeper, more intentional way. While many kids enjoy creative activities, this club is designed for those who want to spend more time on projects, learn new techniques, and develop their own artistic style. Currently serving six youth in grades 4–7, the small group setting allows for meaningful instruction, individualized support, and strong peer connections. Through creative exploration and hands-on learning, participants build confidence, perseverance, and problem-solving skills in a safe, supportive environment. The club aligns with play-based education by encouraging experimentation and creative risk-taking, while supporting the Boys & Girls Club mission by helping youth discover their strengths and take pride in what they create. Critters & Conservation Club (formerly Green Dream Team) Critters & Conservation Club grew out of a strong interest among youth in animals, nature, and environmental responsibility. This club was created to give kids a space to explore conservation topics in ways that feel real and relevant to their lives.

With about eight participants, the group is able to engage in meaningful discussion, relationship-building, and experiential learning. Youth explore topics related to animals, habitats, and human impact on the environment while developing empathy, curiosity, and a sense of stewardship. The club supports the Boys & Girls Club mission by empowering youth to become thoughtful, caring community members and embraces play-based education through exploration, inquiry, and active participation rather than traditional classroom instruction. Together, these STEAM programs show how powerful learning can be when youth are given space to explore their interests, take creative risks, and connect what they’re learning to the world around them.
